Ms.Pilar graduated from UIC with a degree in English and began working for a small school district. She moved to California to write, but quickly found that the business world was not for her. She began working as a 7th and 8th grade special education aide and realized she was truly meant to work with the youth. She moved back to Chicago and earned a Masters Degree in Teaching and Instruction from Dominican University, while she worked as an ELL aide at the elementary level.
Soon after receiving her Masters, Ms.Pilar began her professional teaching career at Hancock. Ms.Pilar has taught English Language Arts at every grade level. Ms.Pilar hopes that all students will leave her classroom prepared to read and write at the college level and that they will have the confidence to express themselves effectively in any setting, not just academically, but professionally and also personally. Ms. Pilar loves learning and is currently working on a second Masters Degree in Literacy through Northeastern Illinois University.
In addition to teaching, Ms.Pilar started the Culinary Arts Club in 2010. CAC meets monthly and is committed to serving the people of Chicago by completing service learning projects that incorporate cooking all over the city. Ms.Pilar also coaches coed Cheerleading which has given students the opportunity to improve their dance and tumbling skills. The squad is competitive and participates in City Wide Competition every year. In 2012, Ms.Pilar was awarded CPS Service Learning Teacher of the Year for her dedication in leading students to excellence through Service Learning.
