French IV Block 3AC Wright SY24-A days, 11:29 - 12:14 & 12:59 - 13:44 Assignments

Instructor

Term
2023-2024 School Year
Department
World Language Department
Description
This intermediate French course continues to emphasize meaningful communication and language as it is used in real-world situations. The goal of this class is to use French as the primary language of communication for both teacher-student and student-student interactions. To be successful in this course, commitment to using French daily inside (and outside) class is of the utmost importance. Students in this course will elaborate on ideas, ask and answer questions, narrate and describe events, and understand short oral and written passages. Students will expand upon their language skills, become more accurate in the language they produce, comprehend a greater variety of texts, and initiate interactions and generate responses in the language in more complete ways. They will recognize the interrelatedness of cultural products, practices, and perspectives. Students will use their knowledge of French to expand their knowledge of other content areas and gain awareness of multiple viewpoints. They will delve deeper into French grammatical structures. Students will continue to be assessed on three modes of communication, which align with the course standards: interpersonal communication, or two-way interaction with someone else; interpretive communication, the ability to understand and interpret a one-way aural or written text; and presentational communication, the ability to present information in either a written or oral format.

For the next two classes (Tues Nov 14 & Thurs Nov 16), work on the Skyline lessons attached under "SKYLINE" on the Classwork tab. I've attached several; start with the first and work your way through the rest at your own pace. It's okay if you don't get through them all.

This is our first real usage of Skyline, so please do help each other out with troubleshooting, questions, etc. I'm counting on you to be a team and help each other!

Merci beaucoup !

CHROMEBOOKS & HEADPHONES TODAY!

Bonjour, here is your work for today:

First:
Lecture Libre.

Then:
Look through the attached YouTube channel, "Piece of French". It's a channel that shares insights on French language and culture through vlogs and language tips, all while practicing the French language.

In the first part of class, explore videos of your choice from this channel, independently. You can watch any videos from this channel of your choice.

In the second part of class, create a reflection board of drawings or images about what you've learned from this channel. Your reflection board can be physical (on paper) or digital (slides, Google doc). The reflection board should represent anything you've learned from this channel today: things that surprised you, things you'd be excited to do or discover if you went to France, cultural comparisons to your own cultures, etc. Be creative!
IMPORTANT : Write an explanation on the back/second page of your paper.

Submit to this assignment (digital copy or photo of a physical copy) by the end of class.

Extra time:
Au-delà activities

Merci beaucoup et bon week-end !

CHROMEBOOKS TODAY!

Merci beaucoup for your understanding & patience as I have had a difficult health hiccup. I'll be back tomorrow and looking forward to seeing you all 💜

Please remember that our classroom expectation of "Do Your Part" applies even if I'm not there. I'm providing you with several avenues for receiving input, your pathway to acquisition, and you are responsible for taking advantage of that.

Here is what you will do today:

First:
Lecture Libre. Don't forget to fill out your registre de lecture, and you can start working on your réflexion de novembre at any point during the month.

Then:
Watch the attached video, where a native French speaker shows you how to play the online prediction game on the website Akinator.

*If you have trouble loading either the site or video try opening them using an incognito tab.

In a Google doc:

1. Summarize in your OWN words, in ENGLISH, what you understood from the video. Do not try to translate the video word for word; rather, show me what you understand using your own words. Include as many details as possible.

2. List 5-10 new words you learned in this video. List the French, the English, and an image to represent each word.

3. Play on French Akinator (see attached site)! After watching the video, you will have a better understanding of what each question is asking. Include SCREENSHOTS of your guesses on this French version of the site!

Submit to this assignment by the end of class.

Finally:
With extra time you can always work in your Au-delà activities ! Lots of options for more input.

Merci ! A bientôt ! 🥳

CHROMEBOOKS TODAY!

Bonjour,

You'll have a sub today. Here's what you'll need to do:

Finish the Seal of Biliteracy prep activity from last class if you were absent or didn't finish (on GC).

Lecture Libre. Take a new reflection sheet from the middle table. Remember you can work on the reflection at any point during the month.

Create a "book poster" for the book you're currently reading, or have already read, during lecture libre this year. Your poster should include the title and author, and brief keywords and/or a brief summary in English. The idea is to be able to show these to future classes to give them a snapshot of and get them interested in certain books.
This should be neat, in color, easily legible, and take up the entire page. Computer paper and colored paper, markers, colored pencils etc are in the cupboard closest to the door.
Leave these in a neat pile on the center table at the end of class.

After this, as always: work on your Au-delà (Beyond) choice activities. Remember that these are on paper, not digital, and to be kept in Section 3 of your binders. These activities really do help your input. You can also find any other source of French you may know of that are not listed in my slides - social media accounts, watching a sports game with French commentary, etc. At this level of French, you need to be actively seeking out additional input beyond what you receive in class in order to progress even further.

Merci ! Bon week-end !

Bonjour,

You'll have a sub today. Here's what you'll need to do:

1. Choose some magazines from the bookshelf and/or black cart in the back of the room. There are lots of different ones.

2. Skim through the magazines to find things that interest you. I recommend looking at just a few parts of several different magazines rather than trying to read only one cover to cover.

3. In a Google doc attached to this assignment, for each different article you read, tell me: what magazine edition, what article, one interesting thing, one question you may still have.

4. With remaining time, do your usual lecture libre.

Merci !

Bonjour tout le monde !

You will have a sub today. Here is the what you need to do:

1. Say « bonjour » to your sub!

2. Today you will be doing some reading in French!

Choose any reading material in the classroom. There are books and magazines on the shelves. You can stick with one thing to read, or read several different pieces of different things (several magazines, for example). If you find something is too easy/difficult and/or uninteresting, choose something else!

*Push yourself to find something that feels challenging enough for your level, but accessible enough that you can comprehend the overall message*

On a Google doc, complete 3 reading/listening choice activities from the attached slide for what you read.

Attach your Google doc to this assignment by the end of class.

Merci !

CHROMEBOOKS TODAY!

Bonjour tout le monde !

You will have a sub today. Here is the what you need to do:

1. Say « bonjour » to your sub!

2. Today you will be doing some reading in French!

I am attaching a file of different readings. You will see each text has a letter at the beginning. "A" is the easiest, "B" is a little more difficult, etc.

Choose a few texts to read. Try for 3-5, but you can always do more if you're feeling inspired by the wonder of French! 💜

You're in level 4 now, so really try to push yourself with some more challenging texts. I want to see you at least halfway down the alphabet! It's OKAY not to understand everything! Your goal is just to get a sense of the overall message.

On a Google doc attached to this assignment, tell me which texts you read (the texts’ titles). For each text, please write a brief summary in English, along with any words you figured out the meaning of, and tell me HOW (ex: context, sounds like English/Spanish, image, etc).

Part way through class, the sub will encourage you to share what you read about with partners.

This will be for an interpretive reading grade.

Merci !
