digging a poem published in 1966 by Seamus Heaney an Irish poet between my finger and my thumb the squat pen rests not as a gun under my window a clean rasping sound when the Spade sinks into Gravelly ground my father digging I look down to his training rump among the flower beds been slow comes up twenty years away in Rhythm to potato drills where he was taking the course boot nestled on the lug the shaft against the inside me was never formally he rooted out tops buried the bright Edge deep got a new potatoes that we picked loving their cool hardness in our hands by God the old man could handle a spade just like his old man my dad probably cut more Turf in a day than any other man Tony smog once I carried him milk in a bottle corked softly with paper he's written up to drink it then fell to right away making and slicing neatly heavy shot over his shoulder going down and down for the good Turf digging the cold smell of a potato mold the sculpture and a slap asagi Pete the Curt cuts of an edge through living Roots awaken in my head but I have no Spade to follow men like them between my finger and my thumb the squat pen rest I'll dig with it I noticed that there was a focus on the pain that he is holding in the first two lines of the poem and he even uses similes and he mentions that the pain is as snug as a gun so an image in my mind that he keeps his pain secure and it brings him a sense of safety then I started noticing a mention of the space which sunk into the Gravely ground and his father and his father digging there was a lot of mention of Labor and I realize that the pain was part of the job he has and the Spades for a part of his father's job then there was a time shift in the poem and he begins to reminisce about different times he noticed his father and his grandfather working I noticed that he seemed to admire them for working so hard for something that they're passionate about and love to do personally I like the ending mohini compared to spend his grandfather's and Father's Shuffle has his tools and writing filled him with passion I think something you can all take away from this poem is to follow your individual path without the employee anyone including your family when it said my grandfather cut more Turf in a day than any other man on Turner's bog once I carried him milk in a bottle or softly with paper you shouldn't have to drink it then fell to write nicking and slicing neatly odds over his shoulder going down and down for the good Turf taking you can tell the author I might his grandfather's hard work and skills ironic how you feel to started when it comes to farming instead of having a real feelings towards it because he did not follow the fat and felt sorrow which is shown in the line but I have no Spades if all the men like them which depicts a idea that he cannot find passionate reading his dad's occupation overall he needs a nice poem to his family's Heritage and hopes to connect with that aspect of his family well as I read this poem I noticed the connection that he needs trying to make with his craft as a writer quit and his father and grandfather's craft of farming since he acknowledges that he doesn't share the same passions as his father and grandfather but he does have his own tools that he works with this phone resonates with me because my parents want me to pursue a career that will provide me with lots of money but I want to choose my own path even if it won't provide me with the same amount of money as other jobs although I do feel tied down to the idea my parents have on my future a part of me does want to pursue something that I'm genuinely passionate about since I'm going to be the one that will have the river live with it for the rest of my life but I'm glad I hating can become his own person and be passionate about his own crafts without feeling guilty of not being like his father
