Computer Science Department

Technology permeates almost every aspect of our lives. Most people are carrying smartphones in their pockets that can perform the calculations of 1,000,000 computers that were used to land a man on moon in 1969. Technology has transformed the way in which we live, work and communicate. Most jobs today in government, commerce, education, manufacturing, health industries, entertainment, science and engineering require the use of computers.

There are two major goals of the Computer Science Department at John Hancock High School. One is to educate all students in the disciplines of Computer Science. The other is to teach them to apply their education in the solving of practical problems in a socially responsible way.

The Computer Science Department at John Hancock High School was founded in 2009 with a mission of getting students interested in Computer Science as a major in college or to prepare the students to use Computer Science in their chosen field of study. OUr course offerings are:
  • Exploring Computer Science -  an introductory class that is applicable to everyone. This is a required course for graduation.
  • AP Computer Science Principles
  • Object Oriented Programming using Java (this is a Dual Credit course coming in 2018-2019) 

Why take Computer Science?
  • 8 of the top 10 growth jobs by 2020 are technology-related.
  • Many college majors at top-ranked universities now require students to take some Computer Science courses.
  • According to the US Department of Labor Statistics, Computer Science and Information Technology-related jobs will see over 1.4 million job openings by 2020. Technology is the fastest growing sector of STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
  • According to Money magazine, computer-related fields have the highest median salary and job satisfaction rates.
