AP Literature and Composition (Period 3ab)

Course Description

According to the AP College Board, the AP English Literature and Composition course engages students in careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways in which writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. This course is designed to prepare you to: demonstrate your ability to closely analyze literature on the AP Exam in May, succeed in college, especially in English courses, grow as a critical reader and writer, and deepen your enjoyment of great works of literature. As this is a college level course, be prepared for rigorous work. Expect intensive reading, writing, and thinking to be a regular part of this class. Expect to develop as an independent and self-disciplined learner, especially in preparation for the world beyond high school. We will practice close critical readings of novels, plays, poetry, short stories, and expository texts. We will write frequently, with the primary purpose of honing literary analysis skills and command of language to express ideas. In addition, we will strengthen our ability to share our ideas through presentation and thoughtful participation in collaborative discussion. These are all essential skills for college and life success.
