HIGH SCHOOL PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS

9th to 10th Grade
  • Completion of 5 units of credits
  • Completion of 5 units of credit
  • Passing grades in 3 of 4 ninth grade core courses 9th to 10th Grade
  • Unexcused absences affect class grades as follows*:
    • 9 - 12 absences no grade higher than B
    • 13- 17 absences no grade higher than C
    • 18 or more absences no credit granted
10th to 11th Grade
  • Completion of 11 units of credits
  • Fewer than 20 unexcused
  • Completion of 11 units of credits
  • Passing grade on mandated
  • Passing grades in 3 of 4 tenth grade core courses
  • Unexcused absences affect class grades as fo1lows*:
    • 9 - 12 absences no grade higher than B
    • 13 - 17 absences no grade higher than C
    • 18 or more absences no credit granted
1lth to 12th Grade
  • Completion of 17 units of credits
  • Completion of 17 units of credits
  • Passing grades in 3 of 4 eleventh grade core courses
  • Unexcused absences affect class grades as follows*:
    • 9 - 12 absences no grade higher than B
    • 13 - 17 absences no grade higher than C
    • 18 or more absences no credit granted
Graduation
  • Completion of 24/26 units of credit. 40 hours ser vice learning
  • No change
* based on 60 class hours per semester


PROMOTION POLICY

The Chicago Public Schools have a very clear promotion policy which states that to pass from grade to grade, students must receive passing grades in the subjects taken during the year.


NOTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION

Parents of students who are receiving a failing grade in any class must be notified in writing at the end of the 5th week of each of the first three grading periods. Parents will be called and progress reports will be mailed.

Parents of students who are receiving a failing grade in any class must be notified by mail at the end of the 20th week of school. Within 10 days of the receipt of the TAP results, ninth-grade parents will be notified in writing if their child will be required to attend summer school

When students have accumulated 10 days of unexcused absence, or 10 days of out-of-school suspension, parents will be notified by mail that summer school may be required. A second notice will be sent after 15 days of unexcused absence.

When a student has accumulated more than 20 days of unexcused absence and has TAP scores below the national average in reading and/or mathematics. The parents will be notified that summer school is mandatory.
